terra mòbil / tierra móvil / moving earth
terra mòbil is an invitation to consider the rich complexity of soil movement in relationship to other migrations. Small soil bacteria translate and inoculate new mineral sites; bits of grasses and small stones catch a ride as our feet move across the land. Compaction, friction, displacement; soil is kicked up, eroded by our steps, buoyed by wind. As we move, so too the earth is moving all around us. Even as we depart one place, we carry pieces of the old one with us.
Participants were asked to collect a small amount of soil from a place that was meaningful to them. Placing the soil in a tiny sack to wear close to the body, they then walked 24km between Girona and Banyoles led by artists Comapañía La Soledad. On the following day, we gathered to mingle soil and share stories from the walk.
terra mòbil was presented at the II international Conference on Walking Art and Relational Geographies: Transhumance, nomadisms and migrations in Girona and Banyoles, Spain.
